Calpe Review – Autumn 2019 – Jet2 Holidays Conference in Calpe
Calpe is best known for its beaches – it’s all based around Peñon De Ifach which is the huge limestone rock that towers over the resort.
As Calpe is best known for its many fantastic beaches, and as an ancient fishing village, would be similar in nature to Cala D’or or Puerto Pollensa. Calpe is a great mixture of old town and modern tourist facilities. Calpe has a modern marina that sits alongside the old fishing part.
You can take trips around the rock and over to Benidorm via boat. A narrow-gauge railway stops at Calpe, which runs between Alicante and Denia. At the port, a nautical club exists that has facilities for yachting, windsurfing and water skiing.
I have been told by a former resident that the area has excellent weather all year round excluding Mid-December to Mid-February, so you could still go for a winter sun break as it averages 325 days of sunshine a year.
After speaking to other agents at the Jet2 Holidays conference, they find Calpe very popular and get a lot of repeat customers looking to return. The hotel everybody talked about was the Gran Hotel Sol y Mar. It’s on the beach, adult only and 4.6 on TripAdvisor. Amongst other things the hotel has a Dorée Gin & Sea bar. There is also a very well equipped gym with personal trainers and fitness classes. The location is excellent.
We spotted a lot of cyclists and most hotels have a basement for bikes and two bike hire shops exist in Calpe for cycling enthusiasts.
It’s worth noting ‘The Cook Book Gastro Boutique Hotel & Spa’ – It’s a small 19 bedroom hotels that offers a high end food and spa experience. It’s about a 7 minute walk to the beach and the feedback is very good. Might suit a short break.
Jet2 Holidays have two flights to Alicante in low season, three in mid season and five in high season – so Calpe would be ideal for short breaks as well as 7/14 night holidays.
The hotel I stayed with was AR Diamante Beach & Spa Hotel, it’s well located – about 200 metres from the beach and promenade. It’s a modern high rise 4 star. It’s in an area of the resort where high rise tower hotels are common. The hotel has good facilities and common areas, i.e. spa & gym.
I would imagine it might be a good bit crowded around pool area in high season but as Calpe is about the beaches it would be perfect for couples who like the buzz around a large hotel.
